In the fall of 2008, my husband's business, like many others in this economy, was not thriving. He took a severe pay cut, and we fought to get through the winter months and pay our bills. We stayed in touch with our mortgage company in an attempt to continue to pay what we could and also let them know we were doing the best we could.

We had to call their "customer center" and were never able to talk to the same person... so each time, it took about 45 minutes to go through the story each and every time.

Each time we called, we asked that they record what was happening in the computer. Each time, they assured us that they would, but the next time we called... no one seemed to know what was happening.

We received a letter from the NC Commissioner of Banks asking if we needed help.

A few days later, we got a phone call and my husband told our story. Even though we were doing the best we could and had made our house payments faithfully for 20 years, our lender was starting to threaten foreclosure. It is important for me to note here, that this is not a piece of property.

This is my home.

This is the home that I brought my mother to at the end of her life. This is where I raised my daughter... it's not fancy and it needs work, but it is home.

My husband and I have enjoyed a very happy 26 years of marriage, mostly in this house. We were put in touch with the Guilford County Homeownership Center and met with them in March.

They worked tirelessly for us... and it was not easy. Our lender made communication very difficult, and at one point, when we thought we had a resolution, we found out the next week that they were still planning on foreclosing on our house.

For four months, they worked to get this situation resolved... sometimes they emailed us late in the evening... knowing how fearful we were and that we could not trust what our lender was telling us.

The situation was finally resolved last week when they let us know that the hearing prior to foreclosure had been cancelled. I am firmly convinced that if it had not been for them and their incredible organization, we would have lost our home.

My husband and I will be eternally grateful for their hard work and dedication and hope that someday we will be able to raise funds or contribute to their amazing cause.

Oh, and by the way... our lender had planned to raise our interest rate to a ridiculous amount... they helped us negotiate a mortgage payment that we could afford.
